A breast ultrasound is a safe and painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the tissues inside your breast. It is especially helpful for women with dense breasts or for evaluating any lump that your doctor has felt during a physical examination. When you receive your ultrasound report, the medical terms may look confusing, but the information is quite simple to understand once it is explained.
Most reports describe whether an area is solid, fluid filled, or normal tissue. A simple cyst, which is a clear fluid filled sac, is almost always harmless and usually requires no treatment unless it causes discomfort. A fibroadenoma is a common benign solid lump that many young women develop. If your report uses words like well defined, oval, or smooth margins, it usually indicates a benign condition. If the radiologist wants a closer look, they may use terms like irregular, shadowing, or BI-RADS 4 or 5. This simply means that additional tests are needed for better clarity. Your doctor will go through each finding with you in simple language and guide you through any next steps. An ultrasound does not give a final diagnosis on its own. It helps your doctor make safe and accurate decisions about your care.
